There is an understanding of UV Index levels and now being frequently checked by many along with the weather forecast. But not a lot of people know enough information about it. Let’s look into the important things to know about UV index and where to check it.
UVI measures the level of the ultraviolet radiation outdoors. UV index have been developed by WHO (World Health Organization), mainly for the awareness of potential sun damage to the skin and to reduce the cost of health care. Knowing the UV index can help a person to know what is the best time to avoid the sun exposure, when sunscreen lotion needs to be applied, wear sun protective clothing like sunglasses, hats, long sleeve shirts and pants or seek shade right away. Those UV indexes vary from 0 - 11 and up. Where:
0-2 means Low UV exposure
3-5 is Moderate
6-7 is High
8-10 is Very High and
11+ UV level is Extreme.
For each of those indexes following actions are recommended:
0-2 UVI - Safe to stay outside and enjoy the sun
3-7 UVI - Sunscreen protection needed or seek shade.
8 and above UVI - Best to avoid staying outdoors. Must seek
shade and use sunscreen protection (in a form of sunscreen, clothing, hat and sunglasses).
Best way to find the UV index is weather forecast apps. Usually once you check the weather scroll to the end of the page (passing Air quality and temperature) and you’ll find the UVI level shown with an indication number like 3 or 6 (depending on sun activity). Other places to search for UVI are search engines, radio and TV.
Remember to check UV index daily especially if you spend most of your time outdoors. UVI will help you to know the best ways to protect your skin from sun exposure, premature aging and potential cancer development. Be well and stay healthy!
