Key facts of Sunscreen Use

Most of us know the importance of sunscreen but ignore the fact of using it daily. Some just do not have enough information on it. Here are key facts to remember:

1. Types of UV (ultraviolet) rays. UVA is responsible for skin aging, while UVB rays are the ones that can give you a sunburn and a skin cancer.

2. Types of sunscreen. There are two types: chemical and mineral sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens work like a filter, which absorbs UV rays with skin cells.

Chemical SPF contain Octisalate, Octocrylene, Homosalate and others. Mineral sunscreen blocks UV rays by covering (like a layer) the top of the skin. It usually contains ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc oxide.

3. Difference in SPF type. It is easy to identify mineral from chemical sunscreen lotions. Chemical is more transparent and has a thin texture. While mineral has more white cast to it and thicker texture. Mineral consider to be an eco-friendly type of sunscreen, as it is safe on the coral reef habitat.

4. Broadspectrum is a must. Broadspectrum means that sunscreen contains both UVA and UVB rays protection. Most SPF lotions nowadays are broadspectrum which is a big plus, since it protects from premature aging and sunburns at the same time.

5. Waterproof sunscreens need to be replied. Some SPF lotions that say they are waterproof are not truly waterproof and need to be replied once you’re out of the water.

To conclude there is no bad or good sunscreen protection. One is more eco-friendlier than the other. Some dermatologists recommend combining mineral and chemical sunscreen to get the ultimate protection level. And applying sunscreen protection as often as every two hours is extremely important. As the SPF protection wears out it can put you at risk. Keep in mind that to get an ultimate sunscreen protection is best to wear protective clothing: sun hats, long sleeve shirts, sunglasses and stay in the shade as much as possible.
